I independently designed a prototype for a mobile app made for users that enjoy participating in pick-up basketball games. Basketball is one of the fastest worldwide growing sports in the world mainly because of its convenience and its ease of play.

Whether it be at a gym, park, driveway, or backyard, the setting does not matter. The fundamentals of the sport remain the same.

An example of this is seen when walking into your nearby fitness gym, or park. Looking upon the court you will see:

  • A middle aged man coming from his 9-5 job
  • Teenager on the high school basketball team
  • Young adults trying to stay active
  • 50 year old dad with two kids and a wife at home
  • An limitless amount of categorized strangers

Although this diversity in participants is great, and one of the main reasons why the sport is so popular worldwide, there are still many wants and needs that are left unfulfilled.

Problem:

  • Player Side:
    • Higher experienced players look for more competitive games, or players with less experience seek a friendlier match
    • Busier courts mean that people are stuck waiting to participate, and creates a risk for those making the trip to the game. For example, players are not aware how busy or empty a basketball court is prior to coming.
    • Preference: depending on the player, some may prefer to play outdoor or indoor courts
  • Setting:
    • Physical conditions of the courts vary
    • The area of the court dictates the amount of people who attend

As a creator of this prototype, I strive to fix these inconveniences and make pickup basketball better for all. This app was prototyped to make pick up basketball games easier to find for players of all caliber.
